Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is bringing players back into the intense world of modern military warfare. Developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, this upcoming first-person shooter continues the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline with a new campaign, competitive multiplayer, and the return of the popular DMZ extraction mode.
With a conflict centered on the Korean Peninsula, familiar characters returning, and new gameplay features, Modern Warfare 4 is shaping up to be an exciting release for Call of Duty fans.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Release Date and Platforms
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to release on October 23, 2026. The game is planned for the following platforms:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X/S
- PC (Windows)
- Nintendo Switch 2
The game is developed by Infinity Ward with support from multiple studios across the Call of Duty development network. It aims to deliver an updated technical experience, with enhanced visuals and gameplay designed for modern gaming hardware.
Digital pre-orders also include early access to the campaign beginning October 16, 2026, followed by early access to DMZ on October 20, 2026.
A New Campaign Set in Korea
The single-player campaign takes players into a dangerous international conflict involving North and South Korea. As tensions escalate across the Korean Peninsula, players follow two central characters whose stories become connected by a larger threat.
Meet the Main Characters
Private Park Hyun-Jun is a South Korean Marine recruit fighting alongside his Sierra-1 squad to defend his homeland against an invasion by North Korean forces.
Captain John Price returns as a central figure in the story. Following his assassination of U.S. General Herschel Shepherd, Price finds himself on the run while attempting to confront a new threat.
Other familiar characters include Simon “Ghost” Riley and Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, while Valeria Garza returns in an unexpected alliance with Price.
The story also introduces new characters on both sides of the conflict, creating opportunities for intense missions, difficult decisions, and cinematic action.
Campaign missions will take players beyond Korea to locations including New York, Paris, and Mumbai. The story also revolves around a powerful weapon being delivered to a mysterious figure known as the Archer.
Multiplayer: New Maps and Faster Combat
Competitive multiplayer remains one of the biggest attractions of Call of Duty, and Modern Warfare 4 introduces several changes aimed at making matches more dynamic.
New and Returning Game Modes
The multiplayer experience is set to include 12 core 6v6 maps at launch, alongside returning modes such as Gunfight and large-scale battles in Big War.
One particularly interesting addition is Kill Block, a map featuring dynamic layouts that change throughout a match. With more than 500 possible configurations, the map is designed to make encounters less predictable and encourage players to adapt their strategies.
Improved Movement and Gunplay
Modern Warfare 4 also brings changes to its movement and shooting systems. Players will be able to hang and shimmy along certain edges and pipes, creating additional ways to navigate the environment.
Another significant change is the removal of hipfire bloom, which previously introduced an additional accuracy penalty when firing from the hip.
These adjustments aim to give players more control over their weapons and movement while maintaining the distinct gameplay style of the Modern Warfare series.
DMZ Returns With a New Experience
One of the most exciting additions is the return of DMZ, the extraction shooter mode first introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
In DMZ, teams deploy into a dangerous exclusion zone, search for valuable equipment, complete objectives, and attempt to extract safely before losing their progress.
What to Expect From DMZ
- Squad-based gameplay: Up to 20 squads of three players can deploy into a large-scale map.
- Story missions: Complete narrative-driven objectives throughout the exclusion zone.
- Dynamic Operations: Take on randomly generated objectives that change between matches.
- Hostile encounters: Fight AI-controlled enemies while competing against other players.
- Player notoriety: Eliminating other players increases notoriety, making your presence easier for others to track.
- Forward Operating Base: Prepare for missions, manage loadouts, craft equipment, and interact with vendors.
DMZ also introduces individual Operator trait trees, allowing players to develop permanent skills and bonuses suited to their preferred playstyle. Dynamic weather conditions, including rain and snow, add another layer of unpredictability to the experience.
The mode takes place after the campaign, with operators deployed to Hajin on the Korean Peninsula to recover abandoned technology and weapons following a nuclear reactor meltdown.
Next-Generation Graphics and PC Features
Modern Warfare 4 is designed for current-generation platforms, with a focus on improving technical performance and visual detail.
The PC version is set to feature expanded ray tracing effects, including reflections, shadows, and ambient occlusion. These technologies can improve the realism of lighting and environments on compatible hardware.
For console players, the game is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 version is also expected to support cross-play and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.
These platform options could make Modern Warfare 4 accessible to a wide range of players while offering different ways to experience the action.
Should You Be Excited About Modern Warfare 4?
For fans of the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline, the return of Captain Price, Ghost, and Gaz is a major reason to look forward to the new installment.
The Korean Peninsula setting introduces a different backdrop for the campaign, while the revised movement system and dynamic multiplayer maps could provide a fresh competitive experience.
DMZ is another major highlight, particularly for players who enjoy squad-based missions, scavenging, tactical decision-making, and high-risk extractions.
With campaign, multiplayer, and extraction gameplay all included, Modern Warfare 4 aims to offer several ways to experience the Call of Duty universe.
